The curriculum provided to students with disabilities is crucial for their individual success. It focuses on teaching functional, lifelong skills to help students lead productive and meaningful post-school lives.
The curriculum is innovative, global, and creative, reinforcing established skills while offering opportunities to develop new ones. By supporting students with disabilities through this curriculum, we enable them to showcase their unique abilities and achieve both individual and team success.
Students engage with both the Australian Curriculum and Modified SACE subjects. Below is an outline of both:
Australian Curriculum (Years 7-10)
The Australian Curriculum aims to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active, informed citizens. It is structured to provide flexibility in learning, with clear guidelines for teachers, parents, students, and the wider community on the expected quality of learning as students’ progress through school.
Teaching follows the eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), The Arts, and Technology (Digital and Design). In the Disability Unit, achievement standards are modified to help each student meet their personalised learning goals.
The Australian Curriculum also includes seven general capabilities: Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding, and Intercultural Understanding. These capabilities are interwoven across subjects, helping students become lifelong learners who can confidently navigate a globalized world.
Three cross-curriculum priorities are embedded where relevant: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and Sustainability. These priorities are integrated into learning areas where appropriate.
Modified SACE (Years 11 and 12)
Modified subjects are designed to give students with a verified disability the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through challenging and achievable experiences.
These subjects enable students to develop personal capabilities and learning goals. Students learn to identify, develop, and achieve their individual goals in the context of the subjects they undertake, with support from teachers, parents/carers, and other important figures in their lives.
Within the Disability Unit, we offer a range of 10-credit and 20-credit modified subjects, including Business Enterprise, Creative Arts, Cross-disciplinary Studies, Health, Scientific Studies, and Society and Culture.
The following subjects are compulsory: English (Stage 1), Mathematics (Stage 1), Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) (Stage 1), and Activating Identities and Futures (AIF) (Stage 2). Successful completion of these subjects is required to receive the SACE.
