The curriculum that is delivered to students with disabilities is imperative to individual success. The curriculum focuses on functional lifelong skills so that students can achieve productive and purposeful post-school lives.
The curriculum offered is innovative, global and creative and reinforces and builds on established skills and the opportunity to develop new learning. When students with disabilities are supported through the curriculum, they will highlight their unique abilities and achieve individual and team success.
Students undertake both Australian Curriculum and Modified SACE subjects; the following information provides an outline of both.
Australian Curriculum (7-10)
The Australian curriculum is designed to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. It is presented as a progression of learning which allows flexibility in learning and makes curriculum clear to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community, as well as the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school.
Teaching is based on the eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technology and Languages. Within the Disability Unit, achievement standards are modified in order for students to each have their personal learning goals to aim for.
The Australian Curriculum also provides seven general capabilities; Literacy; Numeracy; Information and Communication Technology Capability; Critical and Creative Thinking; Personal and Social Capability; Ethical Understanding; and Intercultural Understanding. The general capabilities are interconnected within our knowledge, skills, behaviours and teaching that apply across subject base contents. The aim is to equip students to be lifelong learners and to be able to operate with confidence within the globalised world.
The Australian Curriculum also includes three cross curriculum priorities to be developed, where relevant, through the learning areas. These are: Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islanders Histories and Cultures; Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia; and Sustainability. These priorities are not separate subjects and are addressed through learning area content where appropriate.
Modified SACE (10-12)
Modified subjects are designed to allow students with a verified disability to demonstrate their learning in a range of challenging and achievable learning experiences.
Modified subjects allow students to develop their capabilities and personal learning goals. Students learn how to identify, develop, and achieve their personal learning goals in the context of the subject undertaken. To do this, students need the support of teachers, parents/carers, and other significant people in their lives.
Within the Disability Unit we offer students at a variety of 10 credit and 20 credit modified subjects these include: Business Enterprise, Creative Arts, Cross-disciplinary Studies, Health, Scientific Studies and Society and Culture.
The following subjects are compulsory English (Stage 1), Mathematics (Stage 1), Personal Learning Plan (Stage 1) and Research Project (Stage 2), students are required to complete successfully to receive their SACE.
