Health Program (including SHINE)
At Salisbury High School, within the Special Classes and Disability Unit, we believe that promoting health and wellbeing is fundamental. We are committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information and resources to support and empower our students in making informed decisions and leading healthy lives.
We recognize the significance of personal hygiene in maintaining overall health and wellbeing. Our Personal Hygiene Program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to develop good hygiene habits. We teach students how to effectively care for their bodies and understand the importance of personal hygiene in preventing illness, boosting self-esteem, and fostering a positive social environment.
The SHINE Program at Salisbury High School is a comprehensive initiative focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing. Our staff are accredited to deliver the program and are equipped with the latest resources to enhance their teaching. With a strong emphasis on mindfulness, self-care, and emotional awareness, we aim to provide practical tools to help students navigate the challenges of adolescence and develop lifelong skills for maintaining positive mental health.
Throughout the year, the program covers a wide range of topics related to sexual health, including anatomy, puberty, privacy (public vs. private), inclusivity, reproductive health, contraception, and healthy relationships:
1. Inclusivity and Diversity: We acknowledge and respect the diverse identities and orientations of our students. Our resources are inclusive and sensitive to various cultural backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities.
2. Healthy Relationships: Understanding healthy relationships is essential. We provide education on communication skills, consent, boundaries, and safety awareness. This knowledge empowers students to form positive, respectful connections with others.
3. Emotional Resilience: We aim to enhance students' emotional resilience by teaching strategies for coping with stress, managing emotions, building healthy relationships, and fostering a positive self-image.
Physical Education
Students have the opportunity to engage in and learn about various sports they might not typically experience. This includes activities such as swimming, lawn bowls, and dance. When possible, we connect with relevant community groups that support these opportunities. Occasionally, we invite specialists to the school to teach new sports or activities, such as Boccia and dance.
At Salisbury High School, we believe that Physical Education should be enjoyable. Our goal is to encourage students to participate in and develop an appreciation for a wide range of sports and activities, which helps them learn fundamental movement skills.
Salisbury High is very proud of the achievements of our Special Education students in participating in external sports events.
